Fifth Anniversary - Waterproofing of quilled jhumkas - Tutorial and Review

Thank you so much for all the love you people have showered on us for past 5 years! It has been a roller coaster of a ride but what is life without some adventure thrown in!! Just like every year, we celebrate this anniversary with some love of sharing.........

All the crafters who make quilling jewellery groan (inwardly or otherwise) when their jewellery is compared with readymade, mass manufactured and impersonal alloy jewellery (most of it Made in China). We know the pain! Waterproofing of quilled jewellery has been its Achilles' Heel for a long time and most crafters struggle with answering the question: Will this jewellery get ruined when water falls on it?

We saw the problem for what it was. The customers want to make sure their money is worth it and the cost (of handmade jewellery) is justified too! So, we experimented with a host of resins and coating materials. The wall we kept hitting was: Importing the resin! Most resins available in India either had a short shelf like, or yellowed after some time! Since resin is susceptible to fire, it's transported via ships and that meant long waiting periods!

When Itsy Bitsy announced its line of resin (Lil Birdie: https://goo.gl/2EacL3 ), we seized the opportunity to try it on our quilled jhumkas..........we were a bit apprehensive as the reviews we had received so far said that the resin had a lot of bubbles upon mixing. We have worked around that problem and this video demonstrates how to use the resin on quilled jhumkas....

Fringing flower video tutorial

Hello All,

Thanks to Internet snarls and power-cuts, after almost 1.5 days of making the video, here is the video for how to make the double fringed flower, for which I posted the technical terms (as I thought they should be termed :D) in a post. The video is not particularly great resolution, but if I made it any higher resolution, I'd spend a lifetime uploading it :(

Beehive Technique - Video

There are these times you want to just give someone a hug for being an inspiration so big that your life may well be altered (for good) because of their contribution! Well, my LIFE is not altered but my quilling SURE is. I owe Susan a big one for this technique. She was apparently 'playing around with paper strips and her slotted tool' and came up with a technique she calls the Beehive technique.

Her blog-post for that technique is here. I am including images of what she has created using this technique (May God improve her health soon!)



Now, I must admit that I have become obsessed with this technique because I just picture a million possibilities using this one! I can't stop thinking about the number of ways in which I can use this technique! I guess, I am going to be including it in every single project I make henceforth :)

So, I gave it a try and here is a tutorial video. The video is not an optimum quality (not even close to it, in fact) but my camera ran out of battery (what a lame thing!!!!!) and I used my computer's webcam to record it (bad! bad! bad!). I will sure try to post a better one soon, promise!

The credit for this technique is completely Susan's and I am just posting my humble take on it :)

Four strip paper plait tutorial

I apologize for the BAD BAD quality of my four strip paper plait tutorial last time where there was less "plait" and more my hand in the tutorial! LOL! I promise to position my camera better next time onwards! So, here goes, once again:

As Sonia pointed out, people with slow Internet connection couldn't view the tutorial, so here are the snapshots:

Take four paper strips and glue 3 of them perpendicularly at the end of one. Now fold the one on your right (I am right handed, so this came naturally, maybe, you can fold on the left if you are a leftie) away from you at 45 degrees. It will come under the other two strips stuck to the first strip.

Now, take it from under the strip to its left and over the next one, like a wicker basket weave.

Now, fold the one on the left "towards" you at 45 degrees and take over all the strip, repeat the wicker basket like weave with the strip on the right.

This is how it will start looking.

Keep repeating for the length you want.

The plait will begin to look something like this :-)

At the end, glue all the strips and Voila! You're ready! :-) You can extend the plait by gluing more strips, depending on how long a plait you need.

Three and Four paper plait tutorial

These paper plaits look quite exciting, don't they? I just stumbled upon them by chance and decided to post a tutorial. I hope to use them liberally in future in my quilling projects :-) I wanted to share this with the felloq uillers (and non-quillers also :D). Here is my tutorial for three and four paper strip plaits. Excuse the lousy quality of the focus but my camera has limitations in video making. Hope you enjoy making them as much as I did :-)
