Jumbo size wishes :)

Hello All,

Oh boy, this has got to be the toughest project I've done so far! Paying attention to every single line, every single bend but what a learning experience. I want to thank my client for such a wonderful opportunity for allowing me to try this out. I've sort of tried Raphael Art in this (not that I think it's very successfully done!).

The image is a free downloadable from Internet (explicitly stating that it is downloadable freely, for personal and commercial use). I am really bad at sketching, so I needed an image :)

This one's dedicated to my little sis, thanks baby :)

Sorry but I am deliberately posting a really low-res photo. I am tired of having to hunt down and correct people who have conveniently forgotten to mention that it is my work :)

Bellezza Veneziana con la carta (Venetian Beauty with paper)

Hello All,

 Here comes my entry to the Sweet Spot Cards Blog Hop :-) Lots of leaves.................leaves as leaves, leaves as veins to fannings of the mask...........black leaves, gold leaves..........

A true representation of global unity.........a Venetian mask (bought from Venice, Italy), coloured and quilled on by an Indian, friends Hema from UK, Ann and Katrien from Belgium, Ashwin from Switzerland, Arun from Stockholm and Deepa & Laasya from India.

This project is my entry to the first Emirates National Day quilling exhibition, from 22nd to 24th Nov at Umm al Quwain, United Arab Emirates.

The details of the project:

Mask (bought in Venice) made of Papier-mâché, painted gold with gold acrylic paint
Base of the project: 1000 gsm (grams per square meter) white carton paper, covered with 300 gsm red card paper
Black fannings and Red royal lily petals: 300 gsm card papers
Black and gold 'leaves': 130 gsm papers
Red 'petals' from the flower: 80 gsm printing paper
Red parts of the Fuchsia flower: 80 gsm printing paper
Black and gold 'writing' on the mask: Fevicryl 3D outliners (that came all the way from India for this project)
Red lips on the mask: Rouge acrylic paint
Black swirls: 300 gsm black paper
Gold gilding: Gold acrylic paint

Total planning time: approximately 6 hours
Total working time: approximately 50 hrs (spread over ~30 days)

I wish to thank my wonderful family, my husband, my mother-in-law, my father-in-law, my sister-in-law, my Uncle-in-law and my little son for their endless support while I slogged, working on this project. Thank you ALL for putting up with me. Without you all, this just wouldn't have worked out. A special thanks to my sister, Nitesh, for being that pillar of support all the while and for getting me started with quilling. Without you, I wouldn't even be writing this :-)

A special thanks to Suzana who finally inspired me to think out of the box! I would give an arm and leg to be half as creative as her!

Wedding Congratulations Card

I am sorry that I haven't been really able to post a tutorial for any of my works as of now. I just haven't had the time, with a small child in the house and a full time job on my hand. I have, though, tried to put together a sort of step by step image explaining how to make the petals (that is the only tricky part here) in

I used 80 gsm beige printing paper strips (~ 3 mm width, they are hand-cut hence not a very constant width) for the petals. One strip was 12 inches long. I used a technique called Husking (Inna explains it much better than I do, she has great photos to accompany the instructions) for making the petals. My own amateurish attempt at explaining husking is here

After making the petals, I used a gold glitter pen to do gilding (basically, I followed the paper edge with pen tip). It gave a beautiful rich effect. I pasted 5 petals on a rectangle I drew in the upper half a 200 gsm (A4 folded into half) off-white paper. The leaves has been made using a bright green 80 gsm printing paper (which was about to be thrown away for being 'discoloured'). The leaves were shaped using the quilling board I bought from Artystree :-)  On the lower half of the card, I pasted a ribbon piece (which came off a box of sweets from Doha! I am a GREAT fan of recycling), made a bow and pasted on top of it.

The gold swirls on the rectangle were an afterthought really. The card looked barren without them. The core of the flower is a 5 mm width,10 inch long yellow paper strip, tight coiled and gilded with gold pen (on the side though, not on top, I wanted the yellow colour to show). In the centre, I have stuck a pearl. Between each petal, I stuck 1 pearl each to give richness to the look. The buds are again made of the beige paper, 3D coiled to make a cone. The "Congrats Bikash and Ivy" is my own hand-writing (hence the unevenness). I wish I had printed it but then, there was no time.

So, here goes a sort of tutorial. I will post better tutorials once I have the time!
