Indian Quilling History

Hello All,

Here I am, facing a question I truly don't know the answer to! And for a change, I am posting it online, hoping that my Indian quiller friends will pitch in with whatever information they have.

I received an interesting e-mail from someone who wishes to write about history of quilling in India. As luck would have it, there doesn't seem to be any consolidated link giving information about this. Or, I didn't find any, so to say.

So, I am taking it upon myself to gather as much information as I can about it, so that we can compile information about:

  • When did quilling come to India?
  • What were the materials being used earlier?
  • Who were the people practising it initially (nuns in Churches used to practice it in Europe/USA)?
  • Where does it stand now, as an art and as a profession?
  • How many professional quillers are there in India currently?
  • Is there a formal body that meets/interacts regarding quilling and its future in India?
If you're a quiller, I'd request you to answer these questions:

  1. When did you start quilling?
  2. What/Who introduced you to quilling?
  3. Did you learn about it from a physical piece seen in India or online?
  4. Who all do you know from India who did quilling before you started out?

If we are lucky, we will be able to go back in time and trace who were the first people who started quilling in India and when :)

I'd be VERY glad for any inputs any of you may provide for this...........

Thanks a LOT!

Happy Quilling

Pritesh

Hi Pritesh, Thanks for bringing back old memories. I was fascinated when Venus Traders opened their first stationary store in Pune opposite my college, Fergusson. In 2000 or 2001, I saw a quilled display piece. I thought it was silly to buy strips of coloured paper on a student's pocket money. When i got home, I hand cut my own. I remember hand-curling the strips (they took forever) for a card I made for my then boyfriend-now husband. We still have the card.
I gradually forgot about it until I later discovered Venus stocking fancy strips of varying thickness and width, quilling tools and kits. I've taught quilling to aunts, colleagues, cousins and friends who have gone on to really perfect their craft. So, since Venus is where I first heard of paper filgeree, the person who made the piece there on display is my originator in India.

Hi Pritesh,

First of all I appreciate your research work.

1. When did you start quilling?
In 2007 when was in USA i came to know about quilling.

2. What/Who introduced you to quilling?
My favorite past time then and now is browsing for paper crafts, thats when i came across this art form called quilling.

3. Did you learn about it from a physical piece seen in India or online?
I saw and learn t online only. Initially i used to manually cut strips from A4 white sheets and used a tooth pick as my tool. then i would paint them to give color.
When this art form interested me i went forward to buy the quilling tool and paper cutter :)

4. Who all do you know from India who did quilling before you started out?

None actually. Many people have seen my work and asked me about it. Recently i taught my neighbors and cousins the basics of quilling.:)

I think quilling started way back in 18th century in Europe. I was know as filigree. However, the technique again started gaining popularity around 2009-10, especially in India. We are also seeing lot of innovation in quilling. Some of the websites such as www.letsquillon.com have awesome quilling tools and a section of quilling projects.
