Contrast Veined Combed Leaf Tutorial

Dear All,

I got so many questions regarding the leaf I quilled (which is a small part of a much bigger project) that I decided to sit down and make a video of the same. I apologize for all the background noise :) [Sonia, I will upload the snapshots very soon] :) The original of this leaf was conceptualized by Anastasia, I am merely posting a tutorial for a variation of that :)

Spot the difference

It rarely happens that I get angry..............but this is one of those days that really get to me! Someone decides not only to post a ditto copy of my creation online (right under my nose!!!!!) but also insists that "I" downloaded the picture from Google and uploaded it calling it mine. God, forgive me for sounding condescending, but I am blessed enough to have designing capability AND lack of gall to post a design someone else came up with! For anyone who ever wishes to copy my designs and not give credit, the post-script in my posts will be in bold font here on!!!!!!!

To the left is my design (supposed to have been downloaded from Google and called my own) and to the right is the dear pilferer's design............

A post full of news

Hello All,

I have been away for a while now, thanks to all the illnesses that seem to haunt my family. But it's all ok now. Everyone is on the path to recovery and I hope I will be more active in quilling now. There is a Shhhh project on my hand and it'll take a week or so to take it to completion. There are classes to be planned and there are orders to be cleared! There never seem enough hours in a day! :)

I have good tidings................and lots of them. :) [Sorry for the point-wise post but I am a compulsive organizer :D]

1. I was fortunate enough to be voted the winner of the March Challenge of Emirates Quilling Guild , the theme bring "Love". I am honoured and thankful, to all the people who voted for me and all those too, who cared to drop by to look :) My entry for the challenge was the fastest ever order I completed.....in the middle of packing for relocating from Stockholm! This piece is very close to me, because it weathered such conditions for its creation and because it is made for a very very dear friend :)

And, of course, thank you Amna for giving me the opportunity and Shaikha for the prize :) I am so eagerly looking forward to receiving it....

2. Szalonaisa was sweet enough to award me the "Versatile Blogger Award"! Szalo, you've no idea how much it means to me! :) I will need to write a separate post to do justice to the rules, just give me some time dear!

3. I was fortunate to be picked by Deepthi Udupa for an interview for "Creating Success Around the World" world-wide blog-hop. I can't deny that recognition of one's work doesn't feel good :) It was both a pleasure and an honour! :)

I hope I will soon have some 'quilling' to share with you all............in the mean time, keep smiling :)

Use your shredder well :)

Hello All,

A very very quick post for those who use their shredders for shredding the quilling strips. Here is the video to save you time you may be spending aligning them. Rule of thumb: Don't use the bin provided with the shredder. I I used it for a while and always ended up with bent strips and the painstaking task of aligning them to store them well............this is absolutely my take on organizing them :) If you find it useful, by all means, use it :)

Tutorial - Flower using a daisy punch

Hello All,

Here is my video tutorial for making a simple flower using a 8-petal daisy punch. Feel free to use 6 petal flower punches in a similar way. Just nip one petal off and create a gluing region :)

Hello All,

Oh boy, this has got to be the toughest project I've done so far! Paying attention to every single line, every single bend but what a learning experience. I want to thank my client for such a wonderful opportunity for allowing me to try this out. I've sort of tried Raphael Art in this (not that I think it's very successfully done!).

The image is a free downloadable from Internet (explicitly stating that it is downloadable freely, for personal and commercial use). I am really bad at sketching, so I needed an image :)

This one's dedicated to my little sis, thanks baby :)

Sorry but I am deliberately posting a really low-res photo. I am tired of having to hunt down and correct people who have conveniently forgotten to mention that it is my work :)

Beehive in a Beehive :)

Hello All,

And and and, FINALLY, all that beehiving is over! :) At times, I felt I was punishing myself with this much beehiving but all is well that ends well :)

There was no order for this piece but somehow, my heart was into it and so, here it goes :) The sentiment on the piece is not yet added (I've done some image editing to add that sentiment from top, the space is otherwise available for customization)......an apt gift for Wedding/Anniversary/Engagement :)

Here goes my Beehive in a Beehive project (Susan, I can never thank you enough for introducing us to beehiving) :)

This piece deserves three credits, first one to Susan :) Second one to Miyyah for inspiring me with her rendition of vanilla orchids. And thirdly, Namizam Muda, for planting the beehive idea :) I had been groping in the dark about how to start this and then came his piece, with which things just went on falling in place :)

Since its colourfulness made ME cheerful, I thought it only apt to enter it in Craty JC challenge #15 :)

After a long hiatus - Quilled Lettering Tutorial

Hello All,

After a very very long break, I am back, with a tutorial :) On my Facebook page, so many people asked me for a tutorial on making quilled letters. It is really simple, precision being the only thing to be kept in mind. So, here is the tutorial for making a simple (font Arial) H:

First of all, I took a print of the letter (a part of the word HOME). For outlining, I've used 220 gsm brown colour paper and the base is 120 gsm metallic gold paper. I will recommend using a heavier paper for the outline as this paper will take the strain of the elements being filled inside the letters.

From the 220 gsm brown paper, I've hand-cut 4 mm strips (21 cm length). By placing the strips on the outline, I've marked the places where the strip will need to be bent:

Using a pin, I applied a very precise line of glue over the outline of the letter H:

Then, very carefully (using a a pair of forceps), I placed the paper strip over the outline and held it in place for 20 seconds:

Continue with the other outlines in the same way:

Continue with the new strip and your outline will be ready! :)

It would be ideal to do the whole letter with one strip but sometimes, the lengths are insufficient. This will lead to joints. In order to make the joints less conspicuous, use one of the bending points for making a joint. Put a thin line of glue on the edge of the strip and glue the new strip there:

For letters with curves, like O, P, C, G etc, soften the paper by passing it between your thumb and index finger. This will curl the paper up and measuring and handling the curves would be much easier.

I hope this tutorial helps you all and there will be more quilled lettering for me to see :)

After making the outline, you can either quill in it, or around it. An easy and effective way to fill the letters is using random quilling elements (circles, marquises, teardrops etc). You can also use beehive technique to fill the letters. As I have always maintained, sky is only the beginning :)

So, go ahead, experiment :)
